JASPER, TX (KTRE) -

Firefighters battled the second fatal fire in the Jasper area within the past week late Sunday night.

According to Det. Garrett Foster with the Jasper Police Department, the man who died in the fire has been identified as Robert McCroskey, 55.

The fire occurred at McCroskey’s house, which is located on West Houston Street, Foster said. The Jasper PD detective said that McCroskey’s neighbor saw that the house was on fire and called 911.

McCroskey was found lying on his bed in the home, and it is unknown at this time what caused his death. The reason for the fire remains under investigation by the medical examiner’s office and the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
