Lufkin elementary school reading mentors recognized for years of service

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -

A Brandon Elementary School program showed their appreciation to volunteers who've been involved since day one on Wednesday.

The program, Help One Student to Succeed, held a luncheon to acknowledge six special volunteers. The mentors have been a part of the program for the entire 18 years it's been established.

The program pairs community members with students to strengthen their literacy skills.

“The mentors make the program,” Sheila Skelton, Brandon Elementary HOSTS director said. “We could not have the HOSTS program without our mentors. We appreciate their time, volunteerism, and their involvement in the community. Especially the way they make relationships with these kids."

The program is currently mentoring 50 third graders.

If you're interested in volunteering, contact HOSTS at 936-633-7629.
