LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Lufkin ISD seniors said they were honored when asked to help design a gazebo that would be used by military veterans.
The team of six students from the upper level drafting and architecture class teamed up with the Veteran's Peer Network to design the gazebo that will also feature an extended deck.
The students started researching and designing the structure last spring and presented their plans to MVPN Coordinator Jeff Headrick on Thursday.
"The students have put over 160 hours of work into this project," instructor and Vietnam veteran Robert Foley said. "They should be really proud of what they have done."
The students said they were excited to take on the challenge because it would be a chance to say thank you to those that have served.
"It meant a lot," Head Draftsman Anthony Orta said. "Oh man to give back to our veterans, I am really proud of them. I'm actually going to the Marine corps myself and plan on continuing to give back."
Foley said the estimated cost of the project for the gazebo would be around $1,500 but it could go up with added electrical equipment like lights and fans. Foley added the students will also be involved in the fund raising phase.
Jeff Headrick said he was impressed by the time and effort put into the project by the students.
"What I was impressed with the most was the detail work of the plans and how thorough they were," Headrick said. They just are so complete. I told them you can't find plans as good as these. These plans are what I would see if I went to a firm for the project. They should be happy."
Donations are being taken for the project.
"Our hope is that we can raise all the funds for this project as well as some metal benches we are wanting to get built and then have some to put back for future use," Foley said.
The team members from LISD include Chelsea Reyes, Ivan Escalera, Anthony Orta, Dalton Mitchell, Joel Rodriguez and Michael Boudreaux.
