2 people killed, 1 injured in wreck on US 69 south of Lufkin

ANGELINA COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - A horrific head-on collision that occurred south of Lufkin on US Highway 69 Tuesday morning claimed the lives of two people and injured a teenage boy.

According to a press release from the Texas Department of Public Safety, Angelina County DPS troopers responded to a two-vehicle accident on Highway 69 just south of Lufkin's Spring Lake Drive at about 7:59 a.m. Tuesday.

The preliminary accident report stated that Jonathan Edward McBride, 22, of Jasper, was driving north on Highway 69 when his pickup crossed over into the southbound lanes and struck a 2014 Buick Encore drive by Rhonda Taylor Brown, 49, of Lufkin.

Rhonda Brown and her passenger Blake Brown, 13, were both taken to CHI St. Luke's Health Memorial for treatment, the press release stated. Rhonda Brown was pronounced dead at the hospital a short time later. McBride was transported to Woodland Heights Medical Center, where he later died as a result of his injuries.

The accident is still under investigation.
