LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -

A 58-year-old Lufkin man lost just about everything he owns in an apartment fire that occurred in the 100 block of Alton Street Sunday night or early Monday morning.

Lufkin Fire Marshal Steve McCool said the fire occurred in a two-room apartment building behind the main residence at 127 Alton. The structure was a total loss, and McCool said even though the cause of the fire is still unknown at this time, he doesn't think the fire was intentionally set.

Larry White, the apartment's sole occupant was taken to the hospital and treated for smoke inhalation after he tried to go back into the apartment to turn off the gas to keep the fire from spreading and get some of his things, McCool said.

White lost his son in a shooting accident in Houston a few weeks ago, McCool said. To make matters even worse, White told McCool that Monday was his birthday.
