Basketball Seeks Capacity Crowd for Saturday Doubleheader Against Sam Houston

From SFA Athletics

NACOGDOCHES, TX (Press Release)- The Stephen F. Austin men’s and women’s basketball teams are set to host rival Sam Houston State this Saturday evening and the teams need you at William R. Johnson Coliseum to cheer them on in their biggest home weekend of the season to date.

Last year on March 7th, SFA set a new William R. Johnson single-game attendance record against the Bearkats as 7,328 fans were on hand to witness both the men and women post victories over SHSU to clinch Southland Conference titles.

Fans are encouraged to help push the capacity limits once again this year when the action begins this Saturday at 4:00 p.m.

“This has been a great rivalry over the years,” said head men’s coachBrad Underwood. “Rivalry games, especially when you play a quality team like Sam Houston, are a lot of fun. These are two teams that have seen a great deal of each other over the last two years in particular as we met last year in the championship of the conference tournament. They are extremely well coached and we have a tremendous amount of respect for their program and what they do.

“It’s one of those games where you can throw out the records – as cliché as it sounds. Both teams are going to play extremely hard and compete all night. We don’t like orange; they don’t like purple. We should have an unbelievable environment in William R. Johnson Coliseum, which makes for a great college basketball Saturday. We always look forward to this matchup.”

The women’s chapter of the rivalry will kick off the day at 4:00 p.m. and head women’s coachMark Kellogg and his staff also know how important a big crowd will be for SFA’s success.

“The anticipation for a rivalry game is heightened and the Ladyjacks will be ready to battle,” said Kellogg. “It is our goal to protect our court and in order to do that we need a great home environment. Please come be loud and proud this weekend!”

Numerous exciting promotions and giveaways are scheduled between the two games. In the first home doubleheader since students returned to campus, one lucky supporter on hand this weekend could get hooked up with free Whataburger for a year by sinking a half court shot in the Whataburger What-A-Shot promotion.

T-shirts and rally towels will be given away throughout both games as well and fans will have the opportunity to stock up on posters and other SFA athletics items at the main marketing table. Games on the court, fan interaction in the stands and music by the talented Roaring Buzzsaw Band will also highlight what is sure to be a fun evening of basketball.

Fans can purchase tickets in advance online here or by calling 936-468-JACK (5225). Tickets will also be available when the doors open at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.
