NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) -

Officers with the Nacogdoches Police Department arrested a 25-year-old man Tuesday after his 1-year-old child was found wandering in a road, and officers discovered that he had been taking a nap.

Travis Wayne Gillis, of Nacogdoches, is still being held in the Nacogdoches County Jail on a state-jail felony abandoning or endangering child charge and a Class A misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance under 28 grams. No bail amounts have been set for the charges yet.

According to the Nacogdoches Police Department’s daily activity report, NPD officers responded to a 1-year-old child who was found in the road in the 4500 block of North University Drive between 4 and 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

When the officers located Gillis in a nearby apartment, they found that he had been taking a nap, and the child got outside and wandered into the road, the report stated. Gillis was also allegedly found to be in possession of a controlled substance.

Willis was arrested at the scene and taken to the county jail.

The child was released into the custody of other family members.
