SAN AUGUSTINE, TX (KTRE) - The San Augustine Sheriff's Office is looking for 26-year-old Tommie Lee Roberts. He's accused of keeping a three-year-old child away from her military mother.
Tommie has not been in contact with his ex-wife, Connie Faye Roberts, who recently returned from an assignment in Korea.
"This is not right at all, this is the most horrific thing I've ever gone through in my life," Connie said.
It's a mother's worst nightmare, not knowing where her child is. That nightmare became a reality for Connie. It's been about two years since she last held her baby girl, Kiara Rose.
"I don't know what she looks like," Connie said. "I'm scared she won't even know me anymore. It's horrible, I don't know if she's OK. If she's gotten big."
During the time Connie was on assignment in Korea, Tommie was granted temporary custody of their daughter until Connie came home.
While she was serving our country overseas, Tommie stopped sending Connie pictures of Kiara and eventually cut off all communication with her. That's when Connie got the green light to come home early and handle this custody issue.
"When I came home I called the sheriffs and police department here," Connie said. "I've also talked to law enforcement in Louisiana. I was talking to U.S Marshals, so I had to wait until I got my court paperwork to make sure that everything was legal so I can try and get her home."
The San Augustine Sheriff's Office obtained a warrant for Tommie's arrest, but there is one issue.
"Tommie Lee Roberts is apparently experiencing gender identity issues," said Chief Deputy Gary Cunningham, with the San Augustine Sheriff's Office. "He desires to be a woman, he may very well at this time be presenting himself as a female."
Tommie's latest tweet said, "Wish I was a real girl and wasn't left alone at the end of the night."
However, officials believe him changing his appearance shouldn't make it too hard to find him.
"No matter how hard you try, you can't hide who you are, and we are going to find him," Cunningham said.
What officials do believe is helping him is his family.
"The family pretty much made sure that I couldn't find him or her," Connie said. "Nobody contacted me, and I tried to make contact, no one would talk to me."
"Who has assisted or who is assisting Tommie Lee Roberts in depriving the mother of lawful custody of this child is going to be held accountable by the San Augustine County Sheriff's Office, or other law enforcement agency," Cunningham said.
Wednesday night, the sheriff's office said baby Kiara was found in Alabama at Connie's estranged mother's house.
However, they're still looking for Tommie. Tommie is being charged with interference with child custody.
If you happen to know where he's at call Deep East Texas Crime Stoppers at (936) 639-8477, or contact your local law enforcement agency.
