DIBOLL, TX (KTRE) - State Representative Trent Ashby was one of five government officials named to the 2015 Texas Legislative honor roll.
Ashby was presented the award by former Texas PTA President and Diboll resident Jan Wilkerson. Ashby was given the honor for his work with education reform in Austin. Ashby told the room of students, parents, Diboll Board members, and representatives from other Angelina County schools that his main goal has always been looking out for schools.
"I think it works best when the people in Austin and in Washington get out of the way, and let the local schools work with their kids," Ashby said. "What works in Diboll, works for Diboll. It might not be what is best for Lufkin, and what works for Lufkin is not what is best for Diboll."
Ashby said more state testing reform needs to happen.
"We have done a lot for the high school level, but 3rd through 8th grade there is some work we need to do in reigning in the testing," Ashby said. "Additionally school finance, depending on what the Texas Supreme Court rules here in the next few weeks, we very likely will be back in next session looking at a complete rewrite of our school funding formulas."
