Owens Signs Professional Contract With ÍA Akranes FC

From SFA Athletics

NACOGDOCHES, TX (Press Release)- December 2015 graduate Rachel Owens, a four-year starter at midfield for the Stephen F. Austin women's soccer team, has signed a professional contract to continue her playing career in Iceland. She will suit up for ÍA Akranes FC in the Pepsi Premier League beginning in March.

Owens becomes the fourth player in SFA history to sign a professional soccer contract after former Ladyjack greats Megan Dunnigan, Morgan Glick and Chelsea Raymond each took their careers to Iceland in 2015.

Dunnigan, who won a league championship with the same club last summer, will be making the return trip this year as Owens' teammate. The two played together at SFA from 2012-14.

"What an exciting day for Rachel and for our program," said head coach Wally Crittenden. "Sustaining a championship level has been engrained in this program's culture and now it has led to a second consecutive season of placing multiple players into contracts at the next level. To have six players over two seasons offered contracts is very special."

A native of Houston (Memorial HS), Owens helped the Ladyjacks win four Southland Conference championships and appear in one NCAA Tournament during her collegiate career. She was named All-Southland Conference at the end of last season after scoring three goals and registering one assist in 19 matches as a defensive midfielder.

Owens made 74 starts and appeared in 78 games during her four-year stint in Nacogdoches. The 2015 team captain recorded 26 points overall with 11 goals and four assists while netting five game-winners. She was an Honorable Mention All-SLC pick following solid sophomore and junior campaigns and was also selected to the SLC All-Academic squad twice (2013, 2015).

"There is no doubt that Rachel will embrace this opportunity to join Megan and create a unique partnership in Iceland as they compete for another league title," said Crittenden. "I am excited to watch them represent SFA and am very excited for the future in their pro careers, as well as for our returning players and what they can aspire to achieve."

ÍA was promoted from the First Division to the 10-team Pepsi Premier League after Dunnigan and Glick helped the club win the title on September 12, 2015. The 2016 season is set to run from March to September. ÍA will be getting two of the best players in SFA history when Owens and Dunnigan join the team on March 10th.

The two Ladyjacks will be keeping a blog to record their experiences overseas throughout the upcoming season. Fans can keep up with the duo by looking for their monthly updates on SFAJacks.com beginning in April.
