A Lovelady prison officer was arrested after assaulting an inmate on Saturday Jan. 16.

Officer Austin Simmons was charged with a misdemeanor of official oppression.

According to the affidavit, an inmate said Simmons was escorting him to the shower cell, when he struck him in the chest with his forearm, causing him to fall on his back.

The inmate said Simmons then knelt beside him on the ground and punched him in the face several times. The inmate was photographed by investigators and had multiple scratches and bruises on his face.

According to the affidavit, the inmate said Simmons became upset with him for making a comment about a female officer that he was dating.

According to the affidavit, other officers at the prison said Simmons admitted to them that he struck the inmate. One officer said Simmons told him he was planning on assaulting the inmate as soon as he came out of his cell.
