NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) -

For the second year in a row the Humane Society of Nacogdoches County is sponsoring a free spay/neuter Valentine special.

The surgeries are for dogs and cats belonging to responsible Nacogdoches County pet owns. Organizers are hopeful the response will be a successful as the first.

These dogs at the Nacogdoches Animal Shelter have something else in common besides needing a home. The documents hanging on their cages show they are not fixed. The surgery is required before adoption. It doesn't come cheap, but it's the only way to lower the number of unwanted litters.

During the first two weeks in February qualified Nacogdoches County residents will be spared the cost of an animal spay or neuter. The campaign is called the Love Your Pet Valentine Special.

"Folks need to bring their driver’s license or other ID proving they live in Nacogdoches County,” said Judy Patch, the Humane Society’s program director. “Come into the shelter during public hours and sign up. We'll give you a voucher and they take it to their vets and make the appointment. That's it."

Animal advocates are hopeful this year's campaign will be as successful as last years.

"I know last year we signed up approximately 1200 people on the spay/neuter program offered by the humane society and almost all of them actually followed thru and got their animals spayed or neutered,” said Theresa Jordan, the shelter supervisor.

All seven vets in Nacogdoches are participating. So far, there is no limit on how many vouchers can be distributed, other than each household is allowed two.

"As many vouchers that we can get out the door to folks in the two weeks is how many we'll do,” Patch said. “And there is no expiration date on the voucher, but we hope they will use it as soon as possible."

The offer certainly increases the chances these pups and cats will find a forever home by Valentine's Day.

The Humane Society of Nacogdoches County is located in the Nacogdoches Animal Shelter located at 3211 Southwest Stallings Drive. Public hours are noon to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.n. on Saturdays. The sign-up period is from Feb. 1 thru Feb. 15.
