NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - Stephen F. Austin head football coach Clint Conque introduced his second full recruiting class for the Lumberjacks on Wednesday. It was a signing with a little more emphasis on East Texas talent.
This upcoming fall will be Conque's third season with SFA after 13 years at Central Arkansas. You could understand how Conque is still becoming familiar with East Texas, but he struck gold with a couple recruits.
Nacogdoches Dragon Alex Gregory signed with the Lumberjacks. He's known as one of the top wide receivers in the area with 897 receiving yards and eight touchdowns last season.
As a two-time first team all-district selection, Gregory is sure to bring some speed to SFA because he also plans on running track in college.
Gregory said he'll share a dorm room with another East Texas force, Tyler Lee's Zach Hall.
The Red Raider was a three-year starter at Tyler Lee. Hall set a program record 39 touchdowns in a single season (2014) and was named the district MVP (2014).
This duo is bound to represent East Texas well on the field.
"When we had took our official visit he had committed that weekend with us," said Gregory. "Me and him became close friends and we agreed to be roommates. I'm really excited about that. I can't wait to see what the future holds for me and my future teammates."
While Hall was a quarterback in high school, the Lumberjacks have recruited him as an athlete. The same goes with Gregory. While he was a wide receiver for the Dragons, Lumberjacks have plans to utilize him as a cornerback.
"They told me I could play multiple positions so I can be on the field anytime, at any play so I love that," said Hall. "I want every team that I play to know my name and know that they got to play me for three more years after my freshmen year. I'm going to make a big impact my freshmen year."
SFA signed 19 new additions, 17 of which were from Texas. Five of those signees were from East Texas.
