FRISCO, TX (Press Release)- With the 2016 Stephen F. Austin baseball season opener a just over one week away, senior Kyle Thornell has been selected as a Preseason All-Southland Conference Second Team selection the league office announced today. He was listed in the designated hitter slot of the Preseason All-SLC Second Team list.
Now in the final leg of his collegiate career, Thornell punctuated a 2015 junior campaign by mashing eight triples. That number was tied for first in the nation and served as a new Southland Conference and Stephen F. Austin single-season record.
The slash line of .301/.412/.524 put up by the product of Magnolia, Texas, had him sitting atop or near the top in those categories among his Lumberjack teammates. Thornell finished 2015 as the squad’s leader in RBIs (30), home runs (five), total bases (87) and hit by pitch (12).
Just one SFA player bettered Thornell’s run and walk totals of 27 and 20 respectively a season ago, while his 50 total hits were good for third among the ‘Jacks ranks.
An SLC Hitter of the Week honoree one time last season, Thornell’s excelled in league play by leading the 13-team conference in batting average (.402), on-base percentage (.512) and slugging percentage (.629). His 61 total bases and 39 hits ranked third and sixth respectively.
Under the direction of eighth-year head coach Johnny Cardenas, Thornell will take the field with the rest of the Lumberjacks for their first game of the season on Friday, February 19, in Arlington, Texas. The ‘Jacks are scheduled to begin their 2016 campaign with a 2:30 p.m. tilt against UT-Arlington.
