The Lufkin Panthers beat John Tyler Tuesday night 79-61. The victory gave Lufkin a share of the District 16-5A title as both the Panthers and Lions finished 11-1 and tied for first.
Lufkin later won a coin flip against John Tyler that gave them the No. 1 seed entering playoffs.
John Tyler came out slow to start the game, so the Panthers wasted no time jumping on them quick. Lufkin ended the first quarter with a 17-8 lead. John Tyler caught a little bit of a spark in the second quarter and were down 20-18 going into the half.
The third quarter resembled the first for John Tyler. Lufkin rose above the Lions, stomping them with a 55-36 finish in the third quarter.
Determined to keep the pedal to the metal, Lufkin rode their relentless momentum until the end where they got the 79-61 victory.
Kenen Jackson finished with a team-leading 16 points. Nick Wilson and Royce Kenebrew both put up 12 points a piece. Cameron Hart finished with 10 points while JeQuarius Houston ended with 9 points on the night.
