SAN AUGUSTINE, TX (KTRE) - One man is dead following an aggravated robbery and shooting in San Augustine, authorities said.
"We went to bed about 10 o'clock and we never heard a thing," said Derrell Bennett, who lives across from where the incident occurred.
But just right outside of Derrell Bennett's bedroom, an aggravated robbery turned deadly.
Deputies with the San Augustine County Sheriff's Office were called to what is simply known as a 'game room' off of State Highway 21 and County Road 254 around 1:30 a.m. Sunday morning.
"Here lately, they've been staying open later and later, up in the middle of the night. And I knew sooner or later it was going to be a killing over there," Bennett said.
Deputies arrived to find 54-year-old Gregg Edward Dowd dead in the parking lot. They say he was shot multiple times.
Neighbors say the place is known for gambling, and inside you can see what appears to be a gaming machine. Residents say it has long been a concern in the community.
"They don't have any advertisement. You don't see any young people, and the only way to get into that building is to ring a bell, knock on the door and be allowed in from the inside," Bennett said.
The only sign visible is one warning that the property is under video surveillance. Authorities aren't saying how many suspects they believe to be involved and no arrests have been made. They also aren't saying how many people were inside during that shooting because that's "an integral part of the investigation."
"My Lord, I've got grandkids here at my own place. We didn't hear it but the bullets could have come through my house," Bennett said.
Investigators combed the scene Sunday afternoon for more evidence. Deputies aren't releasing a motive but say everything began with the robbery.
The shooting remains under investigation by the San Augustine County Sheriff's Office and Texas Rangers. If you have any information, you're asked to contact the San Augustine County Sheriff's Office.
