NACOGDOCHES, TX (Press Release)- After starting the 2016 season with 15 games on the road, the Stephen F. Austin softball team will finally suit up in front of the home fans on Tuesday afternoon. The Ladyjacks are set to host Texas Southern for the home opener at SFA Softball Field with first pitch scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
A grueling non-conference schedule has presented several challenges for the `Jacks to start the year, resulting in a 4-11 overall record despite playing some good softball. SFA has already faced four ranked opponents and five programs from Power Five conferences this season.
Last weekend the Ladyjacks went 1-4 at the Ole Miss Classic in Oxford. After beating UTSA in the tournament opener, SFA dropped its next three contests by a combined five runs.
Sophomore catcher Taylor Fraccastoro had a big weekend, leading the `Jacks at the plate with a .357 batting average while recording two RBI, two runs and one double in five starts. Senior outfielder Alisa Hamilton and junior infielder Courtney Chambers hit .308 and .273, respectfully, in Oxford with four runs combined at the top of the Ladyjack order.
The heart of the lineup saw home runs from both Faith Talley and Brittany Lewis at Ole Miss and each slugger notched two RBI total over the five-game span.
Overall for the season, Fraccastoro paces the offense by way of a .316 batting average in 15 starts. She'll look to keep that average up when the Ladyjacks square off against the Lady Tigers on Tuesday.
SFA has found some success against the Southwestern Athletic Conference this season. In the season opening tournament at ULM, the `Jacks beat Prairie View A&M 9-0 in six innings before taking down Grambling State 3-0.
Last season the Ladyjacks split the season series with TSU, winning the 2015 home opener 15-3 in five innings and dropping a tight 6-4 battle in Houston on April 7.
