LUFKIN, TX (Press Release)- Angelina College’s Lady Roadrunners were hoping the third time might be the charm in facing San Jacinto in Wednesday’s Region XIV tournament matchup.
A few lucky bounces or other breaks near the end, and maybe things might have ended differently.
San Jacinto made it three straight wins over AC this season, eliminating the Lady ‘Runners with a 70-67 win in women’s quarterfinals action at Shands Gymnasium.
The Lady Gators won the previous two meetings by an average of 20 points.
Trailing 69-67 with 15 seconds to play, AC’s Malachi McQueen had the ball knocked away on a drive through the lane, creating an awkward shot attempt. San Jacinto’s Ariona Gill grabbed the rebound, drew a foul and converted one of the free throws for a three-point Lady Gator lead.
Still, AC had a shot: After a timeout, the Lady Roadrunners got the ball on an inbounds from the sideline with two seconds to play, but Briana Caro’s three-pointer just missed at the buzzer.
McQueen and Ariel Taylor led the Lady Roadrunners with 13 points each; LaNeique Nealey added 12.
The Lady Gators’ Kaelynn Wilson led all scorers with 26 points.
San Jacinto will face No. 1 Trinity Valley College in Friday’s semifinals. That game will tip off at 1 p.m. at Shands Gymnasium.
The game featured the final appearance for Lady Roadrunner sophomores McQueen, Taylor, Ranai Evans, Briana Hale, Ashley Cherry and Keonna Baldwin.
