East Texas Communities Wanting To Receive Funds

by Jessica Cervantez

Forty-five Deep East Texas cities and counties are fighting for a portion of $2.5 million dollars.

The Community Development Block Grant Review committee spent the day assessing different applications from throughout East Texas. The monies come from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development or HUD and are administered by the Texas Office of Rural Community Affairs ORCA. This year's applications are for water and waste water treatment projects.

Walter Diggles, the executive director of DETCOG, says the program is important to East Texas.

Diggles said, "As the funding from federal grants are drying up, this program is the highest priority for consumer to better their community, not only make it more viable to but to increase economic development."

About a quarter of the 45 applicants will receive a portion of the funds.
