Angelina Co. Sheriff's Office deputy shoots suspect during scuffle

WALKER COUNTY, TEXAS (KTRE) - An Angelina County Sheriff’s Office deputy shot and wounded a mental health client near a church in Walker County Friday, according to a press release from the Angelina County Sheriff’s Office. 

Angelina County Sheriff Greg Sanches said he could not comment on the incident because it is currently under investigation by the Texas Rangers.

According to the press release, the shooting incident occurred when the ACSO deputy was transporting a client with mental health issues from a Lufkin area treatment facility to another treatment facility in Conroe.

"During the transport, a struggle ensued between the client and the deputy on Highway 19 in Walker County just north of Huntsville, Texas," the press release stated. "During the struggle, one round was discharged by the deputy striking the client in the torso."

The client was airlifted to a hospital in Houston.
