PORTLAND, Ore- Stephen F. Austin’s Demi Payne placed third in the women’s pole vault final on Saturday evening at the 2016 USA Track and Field Indoor Championships inside the Oregon Convention Center. Payne registered a top jump of 15-11 (4.85m).
The 2015 indoor national champion, Payne jumped one foot higher on Saturday than her winning mark of 14-11 (4.55m) last year in Boston. Sandi Morris (Nike) won with a jump of 16-2.75 (4.95m) and world record holder Jenn Suhr cleared 16-0.75 (4.90m) to finish second.
Payne cleared her opening height of 14-9 (4.50m) with ease before surpassing 15-3 (4.65m) and 15-7 (4.75m). Although she’s gone over 16 feet in two competitions during the 2016 indoor season, she came up just short on three attempts in Portland.
Saturday’s event marked just the second time in the history of track and field in which two women’s pole vaulters cleared 16 feet in the same competition. Payne was apart of the first instance earlier this year at the Millrose Games in New York.
The Ladyjack senior will now return to Nacogdoches to begin preparation for the 2016 outdoor season, which is already underway.
