POLK COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - Deputies with the Polk County Sheriff's Office arrested a 25-year-old man Tuesday after a 4-year-old boy who lived at his home tested positive for a "high volume" of methamphetamine. According to the arrest affidavit, the child ingested some of the drug.
John Lance Beard, of Onalaska, is still being held in the Polk County Jail on two felony charges - abandoning or endangering a child causing imminent danger of bodily injury and assault against an elderly or disabled person. He has also been charged with three capias pro fines, two failure to appears, and two bond forfeitures.
Collectively, Beard's bail amount has been set at $66,000.
According to the arrest affidavit, PCSO narcotics detectives went to a home in the 300 block of Cherokee Lane to investigate reports that Beard was distributing methamphetamine and marijuana there. When they knocked on the door, Beard answered the door, and the detectives could smell burnt marijuana.
The PCSO detectives noticed meth and marijuana in plain view, the affidavit stated. They also discovered a 4-year-old boy had been in the home when Beard was allegedly smoking marijuana.
According to the affidavit, the boy tested positive for a "high volume" of meth. The PCSO deputy who obtained the arrest warrant alleged that Beard "failed to provide a safe environment for a child who is unable to make adult decisions" for him and placed the boy in an environment where the child was able to ingest meth.
