Angelina College is expanding their athletic department by adding a men and women's soccer program. The college is hoping to have both teams up and running by this fall.
AC won't have a field of their own in time for the season, but are currently talking with Lufkin ISD. AC Athletic Director Guy Davis said Lufkin seems to be receptive to the idea of hosting the Roadrunners at Jase Magers Field temporarily.
Nothing is in writing for Lufkin's field, but AC knows their practice field will be behind Shands Gymnasium and the Health Careers building.
The college said they've been looking to add a sport to their program for a while and soccer fit the culture for East Texas.
“We tried to make sure we were Title IX compliant so we knew men and women’s soccer would fit. Plus, the area has a lot of kids that play,” said Davis. “Obviously Lufkin won the state championship so with that, we should be able to get some. Hudson plays as well and we think we're in a good place to get a bunch of good soccer players.”
Davis said he's already received phone calls from hopeful players wanting to play for Angelina College.
At this time AC is accepting applications in their head coaching job search.
