JASPER COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - A 47-year-old Groves woman accepted a plea bargain deal of three years of deferred adjudication for criminally negligent homicide in connection to a fatal accident that occurred on US Highway 96 near Kirbyville back in January of 2015.
As part of the plea deal, Shelly Warr Chapman pleaded guilty to criminally negligent homicide. She will also be required to pay a fine and the court costs.
Chapman was arraigned on the charge on March 19.
Joseph Burnett, 73, of Newton died at Jasper Memorial Hospital as a result of injuries he suffered in the accident on Jan. 26.
According to a press release, the two-vehicle accident occurred at the intersection of Highway 96 and County Road 443 in Jasper County. The wreck was about two miles north of Kirbyville.
A 2003 Mazda pickup driven by Burnett was traveling northbound on Highway 96 when he slowed down to make a right turn onto CR 443, according to the press release. His truck was struck from behind by a 2013 Chevrolet driven by Chapman.
Burnett was transported by ambulance to Jasper Memorial Hospital. Groves, who had non-life-threatening injuries was also taken to the same hospital.
Chapman was given a ticket for failure to control speed.
