Angelina, Nacogdoches counties see decreases in their jobless numbers

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - If the monthly jobless rates are any indication, the Deep East Texas economy is in good health these days.

Angelina and Nacogdoches counties both saw decreases in their unemployment rates in February, according to a report the Texas Workforce Commission released Friday. The jobless numbers also deceased at the statewide and regional levels.

In Angelina County, the unemployment rate went from 5.8 percent in January to 5.5 percent in February. However, the county's job percentage has increased since February of 2015, when the TWC reported that Angelina County's unemployment rate was 4.8 percent.

Angelina County had an available workforce of 37,245 in February, and of that number, 35,196 were employed last month.

Nacogdoches County's February jobless rate of 4.4 percent was an improvement over the 4.7 percent that was reported in January. In addition, the county's February unemployment is a tenth of a percentage point better than its jobless rate in February of 2015, 4.5 percent.

The City of Lufkin saw its jobless rate go from 5.5 percent in January to 5.3 percent in February. However, the city's unemployment rate for February is still worse than the 4.4 percent reported in February 2015.

"The oldest town in Texas" also saw an improvement in its jobless numbers. Nacogdoches' unemployment rate went from 4.6 percent in January to 4.1 percent in February. The town's unemployment rate was also down five tenths of a percentage point from the number reported in February of 2015.

Here are the jobless rates for the other counties in the Deep East Texas WDA. The January figures are listed in parenthesis.

Houston County: 4.7 percent (4.7 percent)

Jasper County: 7.3 percent (7.7 percent)

Newton County: 6.7 percent (7.4 percent)

Polk County: 6.0 percent (6.5 percent)

Sabine County: 8.7 percent (9.2 percent)

San Augustine County: 8.9 percent (9.6 percent)

San Jacinto County: 5.9 percent (6.0 percent)

Shelby County: 5.4 percent (5.7 percent)

Trinity County: 6.0 percent (6.4 percent)

Tyler County: 6.9 percent (7.1 percent)
