Dramatic Rally in Game One Sparks Doubleheader Sweep for SFA Over SLU

From SFA Athletics

HAMMOND, LA- The Stephen F. Austin softball team used a big rally to win game one 9-7 in extra innings and got a complete game gem from starter Makayla Sikes to take game two, 4-2, from Southeastern Louisiana on Friday afternoon at North Oak Park. The doubleheader sweep improves the Ladyjacks to 14-16 on the year and 4-3 in Southland Conference play.

Juniors Brittany Lewis and Taylor LeFlore led SFA at the plate between the two games in Hammond, contributing multi-hit efforts in both contests. Lewis went 4-for-6 with three RBI, two runs and one homer overall on the day while LeFlore was 5-for-8 with three RBI, one run and three doubles.

Trailing 7-3 in the seventh inning of game one, the Ladyjacks came up with four runs on five hits to knot the score at 7-7 and extend the game. LeFlore, Autumn Holloway and Peyton Tinney each singled in order to load the bases with nobody out. Alisa Hamilton was then hit by a pitch to drive in a run and Taylor Fraccastoro and Lewis each followed with RBI singles to cut the SLU lead to 7-6. Talley drove in the game-tying run on a fielder's choice groundout. Hamilton touched home on the play, making it 7-7.

Just as she did in the seventh, LeFlore sparked the Ladyjacks in the top of the eighth inning. She led things off with a double to left field and later scored the go-ahead run on a Lady Lion error. Hamilton added some insurance with a perfectly executed sacrifice bunt, sending Holloway home to make it 9-7.

Sophomore pitcher Callee Guffey (W, 4-3) tossed a perfect 1-2-3 eighth inning to secure SFA victory. She spun 2.0 scoreless innings of relief overall, not allowing a single hit and striking out one in a winning decision.

The Ladyjacks scored first in game one, pushing a run across in the opening frame. Courtney Chambers was hit by a pitch in the first at-bat of the afternoon and later scored on an SLU error.

After the Lady Lions lit the scoreboard for four runs in the third, the `Jacks got two back in the fourth. Lewis smacked her fifth homer of the season - a solo shot to left - and LeFlore drove in another on a double to the same field.

Three SLU runs in the bottom of the fourth made it 7-3 in favor of the home team but the `Jacks were able to rally late.

The story of game two was all about the effort of Makayla Sikes (W, 4-6) in the circle. The sophomore went the distance for SFA, surrendering just two unearned runs on four hits. She fanned three batters en route to the winning decision.

The Ladyjacks tallied all the runs they would need in the third inning. Chambers, Fraccastoro, Lewis and Annie Mehringer all drew walks to score the first run of the game. LeFlore then clubbed her third triple of the doubleheader, bringing in two more runs to build the early 3-0 cushion.

Lewis fired an RBI single up the middle in the seventh inning to cap the scoring for SFA and Sikes did the rest in the circle.

SFA will go for the three-game series sweep on Saturday afternoon. First pitch is set for noon at North Oak Park.
