LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -

Officers with the Lufkin Police Department arrested a 31-year-old man after he allegedly pulled a gun on them as they were trying to arrest him for shoplifting at Walmart Monday morning.

According to Jessica Pebsworth, a spokesperson for the Lufkin, Police Department, the incident happened around 11 a.m. Monday. She said that after Matthew Haak, of Lufkin was caught shoplifting in the women’s clothing department, two LPD officers tried to arrest him near the store’s jewelry department.

Haak resisted them and allegedly tried to pulled out a .380-caliber Talon handgun, prompting one of the LPD officers to shock him with a Taser. When the suspect reached for the gun again, he was shocked two more times, Pebsworth said.

During the struggle, Haak dropped the gun. Its magazine came out, and the shells went everywhere.

Haak finally stopped resisting when the officers threatened to shock him a fourth time, Pebsworth said.

Haak was arrested and charged with aggravated assault of a peace officer, resisting arrest, and theft. Before he was taken to the Angelina County jail, he was taken to a Lufkin hospital to have the Taser prongs removed, Pebsworth said.
