CHEROKEE COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office is investigating a person's death after their body was found inside an abandoned house Thursday morning.
Captain John Raffield said the call came in at 11:06 a.m. from a property owner who was checking on his house on US 69, just north of Alto.
Raffield said the body was in an advanced state of decomposition, but they were able to find identification on it, making them believe he is a man. He said they have contacted the family of the person to see if they had heard from him.
"They hadn't heard from him, but I don't know if they regularly did hear from him," Raffield said.
Raffield said the property owner was coming through the area and was checking on the home when he discovered the body. He had last checked on it about two weeks ago, Raffield said.
The body has been sent to Tyler to determine a cause of death and a positive identification.
"We think it's a man, but the body was in such a state of decomposition that we couldn't really tell," Raffield said.
