NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - Scholarship money for female students in STEM studies was raised today at the annual Women in STEM Luncheon and Style Show.
Smart women are encouraged to dress smart, too.
The event's purpose is much more than a fashion statement.
It also is a way to raise awareness of the need to enroll more females in the science, technology, education, and mathematics disciplines and encourage them to pursue STEM-related degrees.
"You know about 50 percent of the American workforce is female, and of those 50 percent, only 20 to 25 percent actually advance into a STEM career," said Dr. Kim Childs, the dean of Stephen F. Austin State University' School of Sciences and Mathematics. "So we have work to do."
Today's event was an effort to support those women who choose to go into STEM careers.
Last year, two scholarships were given to women in those studies.
