LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - The stove tops were as hot as the competition between Lufkin culinary students on Thursday.
Seniors and juniors competed in two groups against each other for a spot in a regional cooking competition with students from Nacogdoches and Angelina Counties next week at Stephen F. Austin State University.
The students had to incorporate tilapia fillets and mangoes into the dish they made and then were given a selected group of vegetables and spices. The cooking event was able to take students out of their comfort zones.
"You get to learn stuff to put you out of your comfort zone," said senior Nature Card. "I've tasted things things I don't think I would have cooked with."
"You have to make sure your timing is right and make sure you have everything together when it needs to be done," said senior Diamond Moreland.
The dishes were judged by faculty on campus, and a winner should be announced in class on Friday.
