E-Cigarette Chemical Reason for Caution?

WICHITA FALLS, TX -

A certain chemical found in e-cigarettes and refill liquids could lead to a disease nicknamed "Popcorn Lungs."

"Popcorn lung is basically a scarring of the inner lining of the lungs, of the bronchioles," Keivin Swanson, Public Health Specialist for the TPCC said.

This is according to a recent study by the Harvard School of Public Health. The Tobacco Prevention and Control Coalition in Wichita County released the studies findings this week to inform the public.

"We want the community to know that these chemicals that are in e-cigarettes aren't regulated by the FDA," Swanson said.

The study found 75-percent of flavored e-cigarettes and the refill liquids were found to contain diacetyl.
One e-cigarette user I spoke with was surprised by the study's findings.

"I'll definitely do a little more research on it for sure, I mean the whole reason I started it was because I thought it was safer," he said.

Newschannel 6 reached out to a local shop that sells these products. Employees told us their store does not sell products with this chemical.
Officials with the Wichita County-Wichita Falls Public Health District said their main focus of getting this information out to the public was consumer safety.

"We don't have information that proves e-cigarettes are safe," Swanson said.

If you're an e-cigarette user make sure to do your research and ask questions.
If you want to quit smoking altogether the TPCC has a FreshStart program.
