NACOGDOCHES, TX (Press Release)- The Stephen F. Austin softball team hit from top to bottom and got a big effort from sophomore Callee Guffey in the circle to derail Prairie View A&M 7-2 on Tuesday afternoon at SFA Softball Field. The Ladyjacks improve to 18-21 on the year with the win.
Guffey (W, 7-4) went the distance in the midweek matchup, tossing a complete 7.0 innings while allowing just two unearned runs on seven hits. She didn’t issue a walk and struck out a season-high eight batters. Guffey made quick work of the Lady Panthers in the first three innings with three consecutive 1-2-3 frames. She was perfect over the span before allowing a single to lead off the fourth.
Guffey got plenty of early help from her team offensively as the Ladyjacks scored seven runs in the first three innings to go up 7-0. Brittany Lewis ignited the scoreboard first with an RBI groundout in the first. Annie Mehringer followed with a suicide bunt squeeze to plate Alisa Hamilton.
SFA doubled its 2-0 advantage to 4-0 with two more runs in the second. Lindsay Campbellsingled through the left side and stole two bases before Courtney Chambers drove her in. A bunt single by Hamilton allowed Chambers to slide home safely later in the frame.
Taylor Vick registered an RBI groundout and Taylor Fraccastoro drew a bases loaded walk in the third to drive in two runs for the Ladyjacks. Autumn Holloway, who singled to right field early in the inning, also scored on a passed ball to cap the 7-0 opening spurt for SFA.
An SFA error in the sixth inning allowed Prairie View to score two unearned runs, but the Lady Panthers would come no closer.
Campbell went 2-for-2 with two runs and one walk on the day for the ‘Jacks. Mehringer also hit safely twice in a 2-for-3 showing, scoring one run and driving in another. Six Ladyjacks collected RBI overall – Chambers, Hamilton, Fraccastoro, Lewis, Mehringer and Vick.
The Ladyjacks will be back in action at SFA Softball this Friday and Saturday for a three-game Southland Conference set against Abilene Christian. The series will open at 3:00 p.m. on Friday.
