Five-hour standoff between armed man, Polk Co. law enforcement ends peacefully

POLK COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - A five-hour standoff between a man armed with a shotgun and Polk County Sheriff's Office deputies ended peacefully Wednesday morning.

During the standoff, the suspect allegedly fired several shots at PCSO deputies, according to Polk County Sheriff Kenneth Hammack.

Russell Pumphrey, 50, of Livingston, was booked into the Polk County Jail on two felony aggravated assault of a public servant charges.

According to a press release, the Polk County Sheriff's Office, received a call from Pumphrey's estranged wife at 9:15 p.m. Tuesday. She told authorities that she had received a picture from Pumphrey of himself and a shotgun.

At short time later, PCSO deputies arrived at a home in the 200 block of E. Taylor Lakes Circle in attempt to locate Pumphrey. When the deputies contacted Pumphrey by phone, he allegedly refused to come out and made threats.

After the CPSO deputies set up a perimeter around the home, they called in the county's Special Response Team. The SRT members made contact with Pumphrey after they arrived on the scene.

Pumphrey fired several shots at the deputies and refused to come out of his house, the press release stated.

Five hours later, Pumphrey was taken into custody without any further incident after the Special Response team members made a "soft entry" into the home and surprised him, according to Chief Deputy Byron Lyons with the Polk County Sheriff's Office. At that point, Pumphrey was taken to CHI St. Luke's Health Memorial in Livingston's emergency room for medical clearance.

Hammack said his deputies, who were assisted by the Texas Rangers, Texas Department of Public Safety troopers, the Pct. 2 Constable's Office, the Livingston Volunteer Fire Department, the South Polk County Volunteer Fire Department and Allegiance EMS, were able to turn a volatile situation during this incident into a peaceful solution.

Hammaclk also praised everyone involved for showing great restraint even after some of them were shot at by the suspect.
