NACOGDOCHES, TX (Press Release) - Stephen F. Austin will put the capstone on its 2016 spring practice schedule, hosting the 2016 Spring Game Saturday at 6 p.m. at Homer Bryce Stadium.
“We’re looking forward to Saturday and really see how far we’ve come during this spring process,” said head coach Clint Conque. “I’ve been pleased with the effort during the spring and a number of players have really taken the opportunity to heart and have made the most of the practices. Saturday is the final audition as we break camp until the fall, so we’re looking forward to an exciting spring game at Homer Bryce.”
Saturday’s game will be the final tune-up for the returners before fall camp and will be an opportunity to showcase the growth that has been made over the past three weeks. The primary focus of SFA’s spring practices has been installing the ‘Jacks’ new offensive scheme under new offensive coordinator Gary Crowton, a similar scheme to what SFA has run in the past but with a faster temp and a few new wrinkles.
Defensively, the story of the spring season has been the domination of the veteran defensive line as well as the continued emergence at both linebacker and in the defensive secondary. With a good mix of returning veterans and talented youngsters, the Lumberjack defense looks to make even greater strides under defensive coordinator Matt Williamson.
The format of Saturday’s spring game will be similar to those of the last two seasons under Conque, including a modified scoring system rewarding defensive performance. The game will feature three regulation quarters with typical clock-stoppage situations, followed by running clock in the fourth quarter. There will also be a 12-minute “halftime” where the Lumberjacks’ 19 seniors will be recognized.
SFA Spring Game Scoring System
6 points – Touchdown
3 points – Field goal
2 points – Two-point conversion; Explosive play (15+ yards)
1 point – First down; Point after touchdown
6 points – Defensive touchdown; Turnover
3 points – Loss yardage play
2 points – Missed field goal attempt, Three-and-out
A number of players will see limited action Saturday due to injuries, including RB Kijana Amous, WR Justice Liggins and De’Quann Ruffin, OL Travis Wiggins and Jake Wallace and DLJamal Allen and Mitchel Zimmerle. TE Lucas Askew and Will Taylor and CB Aaron Foy will also be out for Saturday’s action.
With the limited playing time for some, that means increased opportunities for others as Conque is expecting a number of younger players to make their mark Saturday evening.
For those unable to make it to Homer Bryce Stadium Saturday, the game will be broadcast live on ESPN3 with Rob Meyers on the call. It will also mark the football debut of Homer Bryce’s new HD video board, which will also feature prominently into the postgame festivities as “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” will be shown, beginning at approximately 8:00 p.m. Both events are free to the public.
The spring game and movie night will serve as the culmination of a busy day on the SFA campus Saturday, beginning with volleyball’s home spring tournament, beginning at 9:30 a.m. at Shelton Gym. Soccer will hold its annual alumni game at Homer Bryce Stadium at 11 a.m., followed by the final game of softball’s Southland Conference series with Abilene Christian at 1 p.m.
“It should be a very fun Saturday,” Conque said. “We’re looking forward to having a lot of our fans, signees and recruits come watch us in the spring game, and there are a number of other events going on throughout the campus. It will be a heck of a day here in Nacogdoches.”
