NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - Just like that they're back, fresh off a plane all the way from New Jersey. And along for the ride, a new trophy for a new title: NCAA Division I Bowling champions, meaning…
"Out of all divisions in bowling, we are the number one team for the year. 'The feeling behind that?' It's crazy," said Amber Lemke, SFA bowling head coach.
Crazy, the only way to describe this first for these Lady Jacks and their coach and a breath of fresh air for SFA. The year was 1986 when the school last brought home an NCAA championship, that one being a division II.
"It's such an honor to bring home the first NCAA championship in 30 years for our school and it being the first division I title. It really means a lot, we're really proud and we're really excited about it," said Stephanie Swartz, a Lady Jack.
But Saturday's stage, almost like Déjà vu. The team had been there before, just last year, competing once again against Nebraska. But this year, Coach Lemke says, something was different.
"We went in this year with the mindset of we wanted to get back in that same situation, we knew we had the talent to do it. When we got on the show yesterday, everyone kind of had a calming feeling because we had been there before with the same team and we were ready to go," Lemke said.
Determined to bring home a win and they did.
But like anything worth having, Saturday's win didn't come easy.
All for an historic win, this team and this town won't soon forget.
"It's something we're all going to remember forever," said Danielle Lynn.
