NACOGDOCHES, TX (Press Release)- The Stephen F. Austin softball team will wrap up the non-conference portion of its schedule this Tuesday after hosting Louisiana Tech at SFA Softball Field for a single game beginning at 3:00 p.m. The midweek contest is a makeup from a washed out game on March 9.
The Ladyjacks are right in the thick of a playoff push for the upcoming Southland Conference Tournament. Currently in fifth place among eligible teams, SFA holds a 2.5 game lead over sixth place Sam Houston State and a 3.0 game advantage over Houston Baptist. Following Tuesday's date with LA Tech, the Ladyjacks will play three-game sets against Northwestern State and the Bearkats to close the regular season. The top six teams make the postseason.
SFA took two of three games from Incarnate Word in San Antonio over the weekend to improve to 10-10 in league action. The Cardinals edged the 'Jacks, 5-4, in nine innings to open the series but SFA came back with 3-2 and 5-0 victories.
Junior Brittany Lewis continued her season-long rampage by going 8-for-11 (.727) in the weekend series with two doubles, two RBI and one home run. With her outburst, she now leads the SLC in batting average (.550) during league play while also sitting second in slugging (1.017), on-base percentage (.625), RBI (23) and home runs (7). The Allen, Texas native was named Honorable Mention SLC Hitter of the Week following her recent outing.
Sophomore catcher Taylor Fraccastoro was also productive offensively last weekend, boasting a .444 batting average in three starts. She scored two runs and launched two doubles as well.
It was all about the sophomore pitchers in the Alamo City. Callee Guffey and Makayla Sikescombined to pitch every inning with a 1.54 ERA overall and held UIW to a .193 batting average in three games.
The Lady Techsters come to Nacogdoches with a 27-16 record overall and an 8-7 mark in Conference USA play. They are 5-1 this season against Southland Conference opponents, beating Abilene Christian, Houston Baptist, Lamar, Southeastern Louisiana and splitting with Northwestern State.
Last season, LA Tech beat SFA 8-4 in Ruston, Louisiana in the only meeting of the year.
