Identity Theft, A Big Problem

by Jessica Cervantez

Identity theft has increasingly become a big problem in Lufkin in the past few years.

Especially when it comes to dealing with credit cards, checks, driver's licenses and social security cards.

Right now, there have been eleven bills filed by a Texas representative that could make the crime a felony or make a victim get paid restitution.

Police say it is difficult to protect yourself from identity theft, but there are a few things you can do. You can make sure and get receipts and keep all carbon copies. Also, if you order items online make sure and erase your history and cookies after your purchase.

Lt. Greg Denman, with the Lufkin Police Department, says a bill he's in favor of would prohibit lenders from denying credit to anyone who has been a victim of identity theft.
