FRISCO, TX (Press Release)- For the second time in as many weeks, the smooth-swinging ways of Stephen F. Austin baseball senior Kyle Thornell have resulted in Southland Conference Hitter of the Week accolades for the Magnolia, Texas, product. The league office announced Thornell’s second weekly honor of 2016 via a press release on Monday afternoon.
Continuing his hot stretch at the dish, Thornell led the ‘Jacks to a perfect 4-0 week by going 9-for-15 at the plate while belting three more home runs to move further up both the Southland Conference leaderboard and SFA’s all-time career long ball list.
Thornell’s .600 batting average was augmented once again by his extra-base power as he slugged 1.400. Six of his nine base knocks were of the extra-base variety and he finished the week with seven RBI as well as an on-base percentage of .700.
The senior produced three multi-hit games through the course of the week and reached base safely in all four of SFA’s tilts. The only game where Thornell didn’t homer came in SFA’s 7-2 Sunday win at Abilene Christian that put the finishing touches on the ‘Jacks first Southland Conference series sweep since 2013. Against the Wildcats, he went 7-for-9 at the plate with a pair of home runs and six RBI.
His three home runs upped his season total to nine – the third-most in the Southland Conference – and raised his career total to 20 which stands as the seventh-most all-time by any SFA player.
Thornell and the rest of the ‘Jacks return to Jaycees Field for their next four games and that stretch gets underway with a Tuesday evening tilt with Little Rock. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
