LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -

The Lufkin Fire Department was able to use an abandoned building formally home to Pal's Video as the site for a department-wide training exercise.

The exercise started Wednesday morning. After 27 years in business, the last-standing video rental store in Lufkin has closed its doors.

"It's retirement time," the owner of Pal's Video Plus posted on the store's Facebook page at the time.

"We were put in contact with the owner through the demolition company and were told we could use the building however we needed to for our training," Battalion Chief Bill Wafer said. "We've had the opportunity to do search and rescues, hose advancement, personal accountability reports, chain of commands. This is a full-encompassing training evolution."

Having the use of a building is something the fire department does not take for granted.

"We don't use any fire," Wafer said. "We don't use smoke in the building. It allows us to use and enforce and set a muscle memory on the things that we can do safety."
