Proud Of East Texas: Art Depot

The unique, historic building Mike and April Johnston found in downtown Palestine for their art business, had at various times been a bakery, a hotel, a hat shop, pharmacy, Firestone store, and as rumor would have it, a bordello. Johnston's mother had started "Art Depot" in another location thirty years ago, but as new artists were added, more space was needed.

Renovating the historic building was back-breaking work, but in time it took on new life while preserving the feeling of yesteryear. In fact, the restoration has been so successful that "Art Depot" has rceived national and state recognition. Decor Magazine named Art Depot among the "100 Top Art Galleries In America" and The Texas Downtown Association has recognized it for its historic preservation.

Mike and April Johnston describe their efforts as "an act of love", and Art Depot as a "combination of art and history that people can cherish forever."
