NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - The newest elected Nacogdoches ISD board member, Pam Fitch, described her at-large victory as surreal two days after Election Day.
Fitch unseated three-term office holder Tom Davis.
Things are about to get very real for the Nacogdoches business woman as she begins to tackle the problems of a troubled school district.
One week from Monday, Pam Fitch will take an oath of office as a Nacogdoches ISD at-large trustee. Following months of observing the board, the business woman is ready to …
"Move forward and we've got to move forward quickly," Fitch said.
As a team, Fitch is wanting the board to rebuild community trust.
"We've had a high teacher turnover rate. We have a high turnover rate with our principals," Fitch said. "We need to bring some stability to our district and I think that we're under pressure to get that done and to move as quickly as possible."
The answers to the challenges can be presented in multiple-choice fashion.
Will it mean buying Superintendent Fred Hayes out of the two remaining years of a three-year contract? Will it mean putting building projects on hold? Will it mean letting the state take control of low-performing schools? Or could it be all the above?
Fitch said when deciding she'll remind herself that "it's about the kids."
When it comes down to the bottom line the decisions need to be made based on what is in the best interest of all of our children here in Nacogdoches," Fitch said.
Fitch knows she's one of a seven-member board. She said she is eager to know the board and Hayes better. She said teamwork is needed to move the district forward in a positive way.
The Nacogdoches ISD board will canvass votes and swear in Pam Fitch on May 16 at 5:30 p.m. at the Nacogdoches High School library.
Following an executive session, board office holders will be nominated and voted on.
The first regular session board meeting is the following Thursday at 6 p.m. at the NISD board room.
