LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -

Nurses at CHI St. Luke's gathered to celebrate a special award that was given out there for the very first time. The DAISY Award is for extraordinary nurses.

The honoree had to be nominated by a patient, guest, coworker, or physician, and also meet certain criteria to even be considered.

There were 17 nominations. Three of those went to the winning nurse who said she didn't see it coming.

"What inspires me? It's just my need and want to help people, make them better, feel better, and help their families continue helping them to obtain their good health," said Jane Newland," the first DAISY award recipient.

The hospital will begin giving the DAISY award to deserving nurses three to four times a year. There will be boxes with daisies on them around the hospital for nominations. You may also submit nominations online.
