TIMPSON, TX (KTRE) - A Timpson mom found herself behind bars after she allegedly gave her son a Xanax tablet because he was nervous about taking the STAAR test at his school.
Laura Marie Carroll, 38, was arrested and charged with endangering a child, which is a felony, on May 17. She was released from the jail later that day after she posted a bail amount of $3,000.
According to the arrest affidavit, Timpson ISD's school resource officer contacted an investigator with the Shelby County Sheriff's Office on May 10 and told him that a student had been given a Xanax by his mother to help him deal with test anxiety.
When the SCSO investigator spoke to the boy, the child told him that he woke that day feeling nervous about taking the State of Texas Assessments of Academics readiness test at his school. The boy told the investigator that after he told his mother how he was feeling, she went to her purse and pulled out an orange pill bottle with a white lid, the affidavit stated.
The boy told the investigator that it was the prescribed medication his mother takes for her own anxiety, the affidavit stated. Carroll allegedly told her son to take the pill after he ate at school.
"[The boy] stated that he had a cinnamon roll for breakfast at school and took the pill afterward," the affidavit stated.
