Still No Word On The Future Of Abitibi

by Jessica Cervantez

There is still no word yet about the future of the Abitibi paper mill in Lufkin. Supporters don't expect to hear any new information until the beginning of May.

That is about the same time they expect to hear something about state funding. That will happen after Abitibi decides whether to re-open the mill. The application for state assistance was submitted a few weeks ago.

Supporters say all they can do now is wait.

If it re-opens the mill could bring back 450 jobs. The mill was idled back in December of 2003.  More than 500 employees lost their jobs.
