Cowboy sauce...the name alone makes you immediately think of cooking steaks or burgers over a flame, doesn't it? If so, this is the recipe you'll want to keep.
This sauce, of course, can be adjusted to your preferences. Want it hot? Add more red pepper flakes. Less sweet? Use only 1/4 cup of brown sugar. Then marinate your steaks in the delicious mixture, or use it as a topping for your burgers or steaks.
Make sure to keep sauce that has been in contact with raw meat separate from cooked meat.
Sweet and spicy cowboy sauce
1 cup chopped onion
1 cup ketchup
1/3 cup packed brown sugar
1/3 cup red wine vinegar
1 TBS Worcestershire sauce
1/4 tsp crushed red pepper flakes
Combine all ingredients in medium saucepan over medium-low heat. Stir well, so that sugar completely dissolves.
Simmer, stirring occasionally, 10-15 minutes, or until onion is translucent and tender.
As a marinade: Pour some of the cowboy sauce in a ziplock bag or other container containing raw steaks or burgers. Allow to marinate at least one hour.
As a sauce: Top burgers with sliced raw or sauteed onion and some of the sauce. Use your favorite toppings to complement the delicious flavor of your creation!
