LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Lufkin's Ellen Trout Zoo has announced they have a new addition to their animal family.
According to the zoo's official Facebook page, the zoo's two-toed Linne's sloth's gave birth to a baby on May 24.
"The infant has been gaining weight and thriving with her parents," the post said. "Zoo staff monitor the new infant daily to ensure she is nursing, gaining weight, and generally thriving. The parents look forward to these checks because they get some of their favorite foods as a reward for tolerating the keepers checking the infant; they love nothing better than to lie there "slothfully" and be hand fed grapes and other treats."
The sloth family lives in the Small Animal Building near the entrance to the zoo. The staff said it will be hard to spot the baby because she naturally holds onto her mother or father. During this time, the parents tend to curl up in a ball to hide the infant.
The Ellen Trout Zoo is opened daily year-round from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.
