LUFKIN, TX (News Release) - The Lufkin Police Department is looking into the source of a fake social media report claiming three Lufkin officers were shot and killed today and another five wounded.

A Facebook page created today calling itself Lufkin News Today shared the news story “3 officers killed, 5 wounded in Lufkin shooting” around 4:15 p.m. When the link is followed, it appears to go to a site that has the ability of infecting a computer system with malware.

“We are working to get to the bottom of who created this page,” Public Relations Specialist Jessica Pebsworth said. “We live in a society where officers being killed in the line of duty makes headlines on a weekly basis. This is not something we are going to take lightly.”

If you have any information, contact the Department at 633-0356.
