HOUSTON, TX (KTRE) - He was once dealing them on the mound at Morris Frank Park with Lufkin across his chest, and he's continued to hum the baseball over the plate at the University of Houston.
On Wednesday, Trey Cumbie was named a Louisville Slugger Freshmen All-American. Cumbie is one of 15 relief pitchers and closers across the country to be honored.
Cumbie had a great freshmen campaign in Houston, making 15 appearances and five starts. The left-hander finished the year with a 1.29 ERA, pitched 56 innings, striking out 42 batters and allowed just nine walks.
This year, the pitcher has also been awarded the Silver Glove Series MVP and was named the American Pitcher of the Week after two wins at Rice and Cincinnati.
