LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - The First United Methodist Church is planting seeds of philanthropy into the kids attending their Vacation Bible School.
A missions coordinator demonstrated how the church is installing clean water filters for homes, orphanages, and schools in Haiti. The church makes 10 to 20 trips a year to install 2,000 filters.
He said the biggest reward is seeing the children he's taught grow and join the church in spreading the love and word of God.
"Knowing that 10 or 15 years from now that the seeds were planted here at this church, that God blessed us with the means of doing this program, and these kids are growing up in that word, is amazing. It's just a blessing," said Ford.
Ford let the children taste the purified water themselves. The filters remove 99 percent of bacteria for water. They're working on a five-day hot meal program to coincide with the water filter installations.
