LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Officers with the Lufkin Police Department arrested a 29-year-old woman Wednesday night after she allegedly set a fire in a bathroom trash can at the Executive Inn & Suites and then refused to come out of the bathroom.
Maria Denise Collins, of Huntington, is still being held in the Angelina County jail on two Class B misdemeanor charges criminal mischief between $100 and $750 and criminal trespass. Collectively, her bail amount has been set at $3,000.
According to the Lufkin Police Department's daily activity report, Collins set a fire in a trash can in the lobby bathroom at Executive Inn & Suites at about 10:51 p.m. Wednesday. She allegedly refused to come out of the bathroom after being told to do so by the motel's staff.
An employee told an LPD officer that Collins had been in the bathroom for 30 to 40 minutes before the fire started.
When the officers checked the bathroom, they found a small fire of paper towels in the middle of the floor. They also found a mostly burned plastic trash can smoldering in a toilet.
An LPD officer also noticed a charred gallon container of cleaning fluid which appeared to have been used in an attempt to put out the fire.
After officers asked Collins why she started the fire, she replied that she had asked the woman in the hotel lobby to call police because things had started to get suspicious, but she wouldn't, the report stated.
"Collins appeared to be intoxicated," the report stated. "She was arrested without incident."
